Jimi Hendrix is a legend for his groundbreaking guitar
playing. In the few years he actually recorded music
he redefined rock and roll and made his contemporaries
wonder where this odd fellow had come from.
He also wrote some of the most interesting lyrics, poetic
and evocative. Studying him through various biographies
it is quite clear that most of his songs were written for his
mother, who had passed when he was a small child. This song
in particular was written for her. It is my favorite song, with my
favorite lyrics, for it is a poetic expression of a great loss. His words
however, are not so much sad as they are childlike, and wistful.
He imagines her in a magical place and keeps her memory alive
and vibrant, as she was said to be in life. Thank you Jimi for
having so much heart and love in a world that did not always
show you either.
Little Wing
WELL SHE’S WALKING, THROUGH THE CLOUDS
WITH A CIRCUS MIND THAT’S RUNNING WILD
BUTTERFLIES AND ZEBRAS AND MOONBEAMS
AND A FAIRY TALES.
THAT’S ALL SHE EVER THINKS ABOUT
RIDING WITH THE WIND.
WHEN I’M SAD, SHE COMES TO ME
WITH A THOUSAND SMILES SHE GIVES TO ME FREE
IT’S ALRIGHT SHE SAYS, IT’S ALRIGHT
TAKE ANYTHING YOU WANT FROM ME
…ANYTHING
FLY ON LITTLE WING
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH,
FLY ON LITTLE WING
